19th Century French Napoleon III Marble Double Inkwell with Bronze Mounted Lids
$975
About
Decorate a desk, library, or study with this elegant antique French double inkwell. Crafted in France circa 1880 during the Napoleon III period, the writing accessory is made of richly veined black and green marble, shaped as a rectangular tray raised on small round feet. The top is fitted with two square ink reservoirs, each surmounted by a domed marble lid mounted with bronze trim; the hinged lids open to reveal the original glass ink inserts. The piece reflects the refined Neoclassical influence favored under the Second Empire, with its symmetrical architectural form, molded edges, and balanced composition. The recessed pen rest and strong linear silhouette add both function and visual structure, while the dramatic natural veining of the marble enhances its decorative appeal. Both functional and decorative, this antique desk accessory would make a handsome addition to a writing table, executive desk, library shelf, or gentleman’s office. The inkwell is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich patinated finish and wonderful period character. One small glass ink container missing. Dimensions: 15″W x 8.75″D x 7″H.
