Full of personality, this vintage ceramic pitcher is modeled as a seated dog begging for a treat. Crafted in France circa 1950, the whimsical vessel bears a printed underside mark reading “Sarreguemines, France.”

The animated canine sits upright on its hind legs with both front paws raised against its chest and its head tilted upward. Its open mouth forms the pouring spout, while the curled tail creates an integrated handle along the back. Carefully modeled details define the expressive face, floppy ears, paws and rounded body.

A creamy white glazed ground is enlivened by glossy black patches across the ears, back and hindquarters. The black nose, painted eyes and softly outlined mouth further emphasize the dog’s amusing expression. Both functional and sculptural, this charming figural pitcher reflects the playful animal-form ceramics for which the Sarreguemines region became well known.

The pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and retains its original hand-painted glazed finish.
