18th Century Italian Baroque Carved Giltwood Reliquary Mirror
$1,300
About
Elevate a console, commode, or mantel with this elegant antique Italian reliquary mirror. Crafted in Italy circa 1760, the vertical composition is richly carved in giltwood and features a circular central aperture fitted with original mercury glass, beautifully aged with soft spotting that enhances its authenticity.
The ornate frame is decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves and pierced foliate elements, centered by finely carved cherub heads above and below the mirror. The top is crowned with a stylized flourish, while the lower section rests on a sculptural tripod base embellished with additional cherubic motifs and raised on small paw feet, giving the piece a strong architectural presence.
Originally conceived in the spirit of ecclesiastical reliquaries, this devotional-inspired object blends religious symbolism with decorative refinement. The time-softened gilding reveals layers of polychrome and gesso beneath, contributing to the depth and character of the surface.
The piece is in very good condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich patinated gilt finish and original mirror plate. A striking decorative accent for a shelf, altar table, or curated vignette.
