Pair of 19th Century French Desvres Faience Vases in the Rouen Taste
$1,800
About
Decorate a mantel, console, or dining room buffet with this elegant pair of antique faience vases from northern France. Crafted in Desvres circa 1880, the ceramic vessels are executed in the richly ornamental Rouen taste and feature a graceful baluster form with tall flared necks, scalloped rims, and molded fluted bodies resting on circular bases.
Each vase is lavishly hand-painted with intricate floral bouquets, scrolling foliage, ribbon swags, and decorative cartouches rendered in vibrant shades of cobalt blue, burnt orange, green, yellow, and lavender over a crisp white ground. The richly layered decoration reflects the late 19th century revival of historic French faience traditions, when Desvres workshops drew inspiration from the celebrated pottery of Rouen while introducing their own refined interpretation and brighter palette.
Additional decorative detail comes from the delicate gilt highlights accenting the contours and borders throughout the composition. Both antique vases are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorn beautifully saturated colors with a glossy glazed finish. Blue monogram marks to the underside.
