19th Century French Napoleon III Painted Tilt-Top Guéridon Table
$2,400
About
This elegant antique French tilt-top guéridon table was crafted circa 1870 during the Napoleon III period and captures the era’s taste for romantic, exoticized decoration. The shaped scalloped top is hand-painted with an Orientalist harbor scene featuring domed architecture, arcades, palm trees, sailing boats, distant mountains, and small figures along the shoreline. The composition is framed by a black lacquered border with gilt scrolling foliage, giving the table a rich decorative presence despite its petite scale.
The table rests on a turned pedestal base with three scrolled feet, all decorated with gilt floral and foliate motifs over a black ground. The tilting mechanism remains functional, allowing the tabletop to be displayed vertically when not in use, transforming the piece from an occasional table into a decorative painted panel. The surface shows age-related wear, craquelure, rubbing, and softened edges, all consistent with use and adding to the authentic patina of the piece.
Both charming and versatile, this antique Napoleon III table would work beautifully as a side table, drinks table, bedside table, or decorative accent in a living room, bedroom, entry, or layered collector’s interior. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
