Handcrafted in Venice, Italy, circa 1860, this antique mirror is a beautiful example of the artistry for which Murano glassmakers are renowned. The elegant silhouette is richly embellished with hand-applied polychrome Murano glass flowers and emerald green leaves, creating a vibrant three-dimensional floral display that frames the mirror with remarkable delicacy.
The cushion mirror is composed of finely beveled mercury glass panels, each decorated with hand-engraved and eglomisé scrollwork and lattice motifs highlighted in white enamel. The shaped crest is crowned with a striking pink-and-white ribbon candy-style flower surrounded by lush green leaves, while additional blue, white, blush, and pink blossoms are thoughtfully arranged around the perimeter. Delicate ribbed glass scrolls, shell motifs, and decorative flourishes add depth and movement, showcasing the extraordinary skill of the Venetian artisans.
The original mercury mirror plates have developed the soft sparkle, foxing, and gentle patina that collectors prize, giving the piece warmth, character, and authenticity impossible to replicate. The mirror retains its original wooden backing and is fitted with later hanging hardware for secure installation.
