19th Century Swiss Black Forest Carved Walnut Hunting Plaque with Game Animals
$2,300
About
This impressive antique Black Forest hunting plaque is distinguished by its exceptional depth of carving and richly detailed narrative composition. Crafted in Switzerland circa 1860 from solid walnut, the substantial wall sculpture depicts a sleeping hunter surrounded by an animated gathering of game animals within a dense Alpine woodland setting.
The upper section features a stag or chamois beneath deeply carved leafy branches, accompanied by two wild boars charging across the rugged landscape. Below, the hunter rests beside his rifle, game bag, powder flask, hat, and other hunting accessories. The animals’ textured coats, expressive faces, layered foliage, tree trunks, rocks, and rustic equipment are rendered with remarkable attention to detail, creating a dramatic three-dimensional effect.
A naturally formed branch at the crest serves as an integrated hanging loop, while a later metal bracket on the back provides additional support for wall display. The walnut surface retains a warm, richly aged patina with lighter highlights that emphasize the depth and complexity of the carving.
Ideal for a hunting lodge, country house, library, study, or rustic interior, this large Swiss antique plaque is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected surface wear, minor age-related losses, and evidence of old woodworm.
