19th Century French Louis Philippe Giltwood Floral Mirror with Mercury Glass
$1,900
About
Bring timeless French elegance to an entryway, bedroom, powder room, or living room, with this handsome antique Louis Philippe mirror. Crafted in France circa 1870, the mirror features the iconic Louis Philippe silhouette with gracefully rounded upper corners framed by a broad molded giltwood surround. The frame is richly decorated with finely repousse cast floral and scrolling foliate relief over a crosshatched ground, while a delicate beaded molding encircles the original mercury glass, adding depth, texture, and refined detail.
The warm gilt finish has mellowed beautifully over more than a century, developing a rich, luminous patina that enhances the intricate floral decoration while preserving the understated elegance for which Louis Philippe mirrors are celebrated. The original mercury plate retains the softly shimmering reflection prized by collectors, with light foxing and scattered age-related spotting that attest to its authenticity and antique character.
The mirror retains its original wide-plank wood back, complete with workshop stenciling, and has been fitted with a later hanging wire for secure installation. Versatile in both form and scale, it may be displayed above a console, commode, vanity, dresser, or chest of drawers.
This antique French mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a beautifully aged gilt finish with desirable original mercury glass.
