Mid-Century American Marine Oil Painting of Sailing Vessels Signed C. Parker
$3,400
About
A dramatic maritime composition with strong movement and atmosphere, this large vintage oil painting captures several sailing vessels navigating choppy coastal waters beneath an expansive cloud-filled sky. Crafted circa 1965, the work is signed “C. Parker” in the lower right corner.
The composition is dominated by a substantial gaff-rigged sailing vessel in the foreground, shown under full sail and flying an American flag. A second sailboat cuts through the waves in the middle distance, while another smaller vessel appears along the horizon. In the foreground, a rowboat carrying three figures rides through the rough water, adding scale and animation to the scene.
The artist skillfully conveys the force of the wind through the billowing sails, taut rigging, and rolling sea. Broad passages of blue, gray, green, cream, and warm earth tones create an atmospheric palette, while highlights across the water and clouds introduce depth and changing light. The detailed rendering of the boats contrasts with the freer brushwork of the waves and sky, giving the painting both realism and energy.
Signed “C. Parker,” the artist has not been positively identified. The painting was acquired on Cape Cod, a provenance that complements its distinctly American coastal subject, though the exact location depicted remains unknown.
Presented in an ornate carved giltwood frame embellished with scrolling foliate decoration and molded borders, the painting has an impressive decorative presence and would be equally at home in a library, office, coastal residence, yacht club, or traditional interior.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
