This substantial antique terracotta jar was crafted in Italy circa 1870 and displays the strong sculptural form and utilitarian character associated with traditional Mediterranean storage vessels. Originally intended for storing olive oil, the large hand-thrown vessel now makes an impressive architectural accent indoors or out.

The heavy jar is formed with a broad rolled rim and short neck fitted with three tall strap handles, each extending from the lip to the sloping shoulder. The generously rounded body is articulated with a series of horizontal ribs that create rhythm and visual depth, while a raised scalloped band around the upper shoulder adds a subtle decorative detail.

Its most compelling feature is the richly weathered surface. Decades of exposure have produced an exceptional natural patina in muted terracotta, pale ochre, soft green, and chalky mineral tones. Mossy coloration, lime deposits, abrasions, and small losses contribute to the authentic aged character of the piece.

Later drainage holes have been added to the base, making the jar suitable for use as an oversized garden planter, cache pot, or sculptural vessel. It would work especially well with an olive tree, citrus, or trailing greenery.

The antique jar is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with heavy weathering, mineral deposits, and minor discoloration.
