A charming survival from the golden age of handwritten correspondence, this antique postal scale was designed for weighing letters and calculating the correct postage. Crafted in England circa 1915, the compact balance scale is constructed of brass and mounted on a rectangular oak base raised on small bun feet.

The decorative pierced supports hold the articulated balance beam, with a circular weighing platform at one end and a square rate plate at the other. The plate is engraved “Inland Postal Rates for Letters” and lists the contemporary charges by weight, providing an appealing glimpse into early British postal history.

The oak base incorporates three recessed wells containing a graduated set of removable nesting brass weights. Each weight is individually stamped with its denomination, allowing letters and small parcels to be weighed with precision. The warm, gently aged brass complements the rich tone and visible grain of the oak, while minor oxidation, surface marks, and wear contribute authentic period character.

Both practical and decorative, the scale would make an engaging antique accessory for a library, study, office, or writing desk. It is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with the weights included.
