19th Century French Iron Balance Scale with Brass Trays
$895
About
This handsome antique balance scale was crafted in France circa 1880. Made of cast iron, the substantial scale features a long rectangular stepped base supporting a traditional two-arm weighing mechanism fitted with a pair of shallow circular brass trays.
The central upright is decorated with an openwork Gothic-inspired finial, while the horizontal balance beam is accented with small diamond motifs. Raised lettering on the base reads “FORCE 2 KILOS,” indicating a weighing capacity of two kilograms. The brass trays retain a warm, softly aged surface that contrasts beautifully with the dark patinated iron framework.
Originally used by a grocer, merchant, or shopkeeper for weighing food and dry goods, this functional antique is now equally appealing as a decorative accessory. It would make a wonderful addition to a kitchen, pantry, restaurant, or collection of antique culinary and mercantile objects.
The scale is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with variations in patina consistent with its utilitarian history. The brass trays show an attractive aged finish throughout.
