Pair 19th Century French Polished Spelter Urn Table Lamps with Cherubs
$1,800
About
Richly detailed and highly decorative, this pair of antique table lamps was crafted in France circa 1870. The substantial urn-form bodies are made of spelter and feature an elaborate polished finish that highlights the sculptural relief and ornamental details.
The lamps are decorated with lively figural scenes of cherubs in relief, surrounded by scrolling foliage and classical motifs. Each urn is flanked by curving handles terminating in stylized masks, while the lower body is finished with fluting and rests on a stepped circular base raised on small feet. Additional foliate decoration appears around the shoulders and base, giving the pair a richly layered Renaissance Revival character.
Originally decorative vessels, the pieces were later converted into table lamps and fitted with standard sockets and cords. The two lamps were conceived as pendants and retain a dark, polished metal surface with attractive variation and patina throughout.
These substantial antique lamps would work beautifully on a console, commode, buffet, or as bedside lamps in a traditional interior. Shades are not included.
The lamps are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
