19th Century French Neoclassical Pewter Magnifying Glass with Laurel Wreath
$525
About
A remarkable example of 19th-century French craftsmanship, this oversized antique magnifying glass combines classical ornamentation with an impressive architectural scale. Crafted in France circa 1870, the decorative desk accessory features a circular magnifying lens surrounded by an intricately cast pewter laurel wreath, with finely detailed leaves arranged in a symmetrical neoclassical composition. A small suspension ring at the top adds another decorative detail.
The exceptionally long, tapering handle is embellished with vertical fluting, a twisted central section, and graduated molded bands. It terminates in a beautifully engraved grip decorated with scrolling foliage and a rounded finial. The combination of geometric and botanical motifs reflects the refined decorative vocabulary of the Napoleon III period.
The silvery pewter surface retains a soft, naturally aged patina, accentuating the detailed metalwork and sculptural quality of the piece. Measuring over 28 inches long, this unusual antique magnifying glass is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A distinctive decorative accessory for a library, executive desk, or collector’s cabinet.
