Early 19th Century French Empire Painted Gaming Room Canvas Signed L. David
$10,000
About
Decorate a game room, library, club room, or large den wall with this monumental antique French hand-painted canvas, signed L. David and titled “Le Cercle de Jeux.” Created in France circa 1810, the impressive wall canvas depicts an animated Empire-period gaming room with gentlemen gathered around several tables playing cards, chess, and other games of chance.
The composition is filled with wonderful narrative detail, from the elegant Empire dress and military uniforms to the green draped windows, architectural columns, painted laurel border, and richly furnished interior. The warm palette of green, ochre, terracotta, and soft brown gives the piece an atmospheric, time-softened decorative presence.
Signed lower right “L. David,” the antique canvas is attributed to Louis Alphonse David, who entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1817 as a student of Girodet and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1849. The canvas shows expected age wear, surface craquelure, small losses, holes, and wear along the edges, consistent with age and use, adding to its authentic decorative character.
