A quiet country road winds through a picturesque French village in this antique landscape painting by Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941). Crafted in France circa 1890, the oil on canvas depicts villagers gathered among rustic cottages, with chickens roaming in the foreground beneath a softly illuminated sky. Galien-Laloue’s delicate brushwork, atmospheric perspective, and warm natural palette give the composition a peaceful sense of rural life.

The work bears the artist’s signature and is presented in an ornate carved giltwood frame. The reverse also bears the name “Galien-Laloue.” We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this painting, which is recorded in his archives of the artist. The canvas has been professionally relined and is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.

Eugène Galien-Laloue was a celebrated French painter best known for his evocative views of Belle Époque Paris, as well as landscapes of Normandy and Seine-et-Marne. Working in oil and gouache, he became admired for his detailed architecture, lively figures, and masterful treatment of changing light and atmosphere. Because of an exclusive gallery agreement, he also worked under several pseudonyms, including L. Dupuy, Juliany, E. Galiany, Lievin, A. Languinais, and Dumoutier. The artist is listed in Bénézit, and his works are held in several French museum collections.
