19th Century French Empire Marble Top Carved Veneer Elm Commode Chest of Drawers
$3,300
About
This elegant antique chest of drawers was crafted in France, circa 1870, in the refined Empire style. Built in richly figured fruitwood over elm, the petite commode features clean architectural lines softened by rounded front corner columns, each accented with finely cast bronze rings at the capital and base. The case rests on turned feet over a straight plinth, giving the piece a balanced and grounded presence.
The façade is fitted with three spacious drawers across the front, each retaining its original gilt bronze pulls and keyhole escutcheons, along with a discreet fourth drawer concealed beneath the top. The drawer fronts display beautiful natural movement in the wood grain, enhanced by a warm and rich walnut patina that adds depth and character.
The piece is crowned with its original black marble top, offering both contrast and durability, ideal for everyday use.
This antique commode is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a desirable timeworn surface. Versatile in scale, it would serve beautifully as a bedside table, entry chest, or powder room vanity with the addition of a sink.
