17th Century Spanish Carved Polychrome Bust of Christ on Stand
$800
About
Crafted in Spain, circa 1680, this antique carved wooden bust depicts the head of Christ with a strikingly expressive, devotional presence typical of the Haute Époque period. The sculpture features a solemn, contemplative face with closed eyes, elongated nose, and delicately defined lips, framed by deeply carved hair and a full beard rendered with strong linear texture.
Executed in wood with remnants of its original polychrome and painted surface, the finish displays beautiful age-related wear, revealing layers of pigment and gesso that enhance the spiritual intensity and authenticity of the piece. The back retains visible tool marks and carving striations, further emphasizing its hand-crafted origin.
The bust is mounted on a later square wooden base painted in black, providing stability and a clean presentation while allowing the historic carving to remain the focal point. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected surface wear, minor losses, and a richly aged patina throughout.
A powerful decorative and devotional object, ideal for a mantel, console, or curated tabletop vignette in a traditional or eclectic interior.
