This exceptional antique Aubusson tapestry was handwoven in France circa 1760. The tall vertical panel presents a classic verdure landscape, centered with a lush tree canopy, rocky foreground, water, a small bridge, architectural ruins, and an exotic bird in flight. The composition is framed by an elegant floral and acanthus leaf border in warm brick red, cream, deep blue, and soft green tones, creating a richly decorative yet beautifully faded 18th century palette.
The tapestry retains wonderful old-world character, with visible handwoven texture, softened colors, age wear, small areas of restoration and surface irregularities consistent with its age and use. It has been backed and finished with a dark binding for hanging and preservation. With its impressive narrow scale, this antique French wall hanging would make a striking statement in an entry, stair landing, dining room, library, or above a long console.
Aubusson tapestries, woven in central France, were celebrated throughout the 17th and 18th centuries for their refined pastoral landscapes, architectural garden scenes, and painterly use of wool threads.
