18th C. French Walnut Relief of “The Betrothal of the Virgin Mary and Joseph”
$2,200
About
This exceptional hand-carved French walnut relief, circa 1780, likely represents “The Betrothal of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph”, a traditional Christian theme depicting the moment when the high priest unites the couple in holy matrimony. The central figure, a bishop or priest, extends his hand to join theirs, symbolizing divine blessing. Executed in deep Baroque-style relief, the composition features a sweeping oval medallion framed with acanthus scrolls, leaves, and fruiting branches, symbolizing faith and endurance. The sculptural depth and movement of the drapery evoke the lively expressiveness characteristic of the late Baroque and early Rococo period. The piece adorns a rich walnut patinated finish, enhancing its dimensionality and depth. A new hanging device has been added to the back for easy wall display. Measures: 21.25″ W x 2″ D x 13″ H.
