18th Century French Louis XIV Style Cast Iron Fireback with Court Scene
$1,400
About
Decorate a fireplace or kitchen hearth with this elegant antique French iron fireback, crafted circa 1760. The rectangular plaque features a finely cast high-relief scene depicting a formal courtly gathering, rendered in the Louis XIV style. The composition shows a group of aristocratic figures dressed in elaborate period attire with long curled wigs and richly detailed garments, engaged in what appears to be a ceremonial presentation or audience.
The architectural backdrop with classical elements and the presence of attendants further reinforce the refined, aristocratic setting, while the ornate scrolled crest at the pediment adds balance and decorative richness to the overall design.
Cast in solid iron, the fireback displays excellent depth and crisp detailing throughout. It is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a beautifully aged patinated surface. Beyond its traditional use in a fireplace, the piece would also make a striking decorative backsplash behind a stove or as a wall-mounted architectural accent.
