Early 20th Century Italian Marble Children Sculpture Signed A. Gory
$3,500
About
This elegant early 20th Century Italian carved marble sculpture, created circa 1920 and signed A. Gory, depicts two young children in a tender embrace. One child leans in affectionately to kiss the cheek of the other, whose softly draped veil, gentle expression, and finely modeled features give the composition a quiet devotional quality. Carved from white marble with subtle natural veining, the sculpture displays beautiful attention to the children’s faces, curled hair, garments, and delicate hand placement, capturing the sentimental realism associated with fine Belle Époque and early 20th Century Italian sculpture.
The bust rests on a separate molded walnut base with a warm, rich patina, providing a handsome contrast to the luminous white marble. The antique sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with well-preserved carving, soft surface wear, and minor natural variation in the stone. Signed on the back A. Gory, the work is attributed to Affortunato Gory, born in Florence and known for his refined marble, bronze, and chryselephantine figures of women and children. A graceful decorative piece for a study, library, mantel, console, or collector’s cabinet.
