18th Century French Carved Oak Winged Putto with Fleur-de-Lys Heraldic Shield
$1,300
About
Hand-carved in France circa 1780, this exceptional antique oak sculpture depicts a kneeling winged putto presenting a heraldic shield centered with three fleur-de-lys. The composition reflects the refined decorative vocabulary of late 18th century French craftsmanship, where ecclesiastical symbolism and noble heraldry were integrated into architectural ornament. Executed from solid oak, the figure displays beautifully modeled anatomy and expressive detailing. The cherub’s softly rounded face is framed by deeply undercut curls, while the wings are carved with layered feather work that demonstrates confident hand craftsmanship. The draped cloth at the waist is rendered with fluid, naturalistic folds, adding movement to the devotional stance. The shield is framed with scrolling foliate carving and prominently decorated with three carved fleur-de-lys, emblematic of French royal symbolism. The sculpture retains a rich, darkened oak patina that enhances the depth of carving and highlights the natural grain. The underside reveals early hand-worked tool marks and age-related shrinkage consistent with 18th century construction. The antique piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor surface wear and natural separations typical of solid oak of this period. Likely originating as an architectural fragment from a church interior, choir stall, or noble residence, this 18th century French carving now serves beautifully as a sculptural accent on a console, library table, or mantel, bringing historical presence and sculptural character to both traditional and curated modern interiors.
