19th C. French Cast Stone Weathered Garden Planters from Normandy, Set of 4
$1,975
About
This set of four antique French garden planters was crafted in Normandy circa 1880 in cast stone, known in France as pierre reconstituée. Each vessel features a classic flared trumpet form with vertically fluted sides and a thick rolled rim, raised on a simple circular foot. The restrained silhouette reflects the rustic provincial aesthetic of northern France, where durable cast stone garden wares were designed to withstand the elements while maintaining understated elegance. Hand-cast in a cement and crushed stone composite, the surface reveals a beautifully timeworn patina with natural mineral deposits, granular texture, and traces of lichen in soft gray, cream, and mossy green tones. The porous character of the stone and subtle casting irregularities further attest to their authentic 19th century construction. The interiors show honest wear from outdoor use, enhancing their antique garden presence. Substantial yet manageable in scale, these antique Normandy planters are ideal for seasonal plantings, boxwood topiaries, or flowering arrangements. They also work beautifully indoors as sculptural decorative vessels in a sunroom, conservatory, or entry. The pieces are in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use, with surface wear consistent with long-term outdoor exposure. Dimensions of each: 18” diameter x 11” H
