About
This important antique still life painting, executed circa 1880, is the work of Pierre Bourgogne, a recognized French painter documented in Bénézit. The composition depicts a luxuriant bouquet of chrysanthemums in shades of blush pink, ivory, pale yellow, and deep crimson, artfully arranged and spilling from a tipped tambourine against a dark, atmospheric background. The inclusion of the musical instrument introduces a subtle sense of movement and rhythm, elevating the composition beyond a traditional floral still life. Painted in oil on canvas, the work demonstrates Bourgogne’s refined academic training through confident brushwork, nuanced tonal transitions, and careful attention to texture and light. The flowers are rendered with remarkable freshness and depth, while the restrained background allows the composition to emerge with clarity and elegance. Pierre Bourgogne was born in Paris in 1838 and died in 1904 in Sèvres, where he was active for much of his career. He specialized in still lifes of flowers and fruit and studied under Victor Galland, Charles Pollet, and Lequien. Bourgogne exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1869 to 1904, receiving an honorable mention in 1888 and a medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. His work was also shown at the Royal Academy in London, and examples of his paintings are held in French museum collections, including Béziers. His paintings are well documented in public auction records throughout the 20th century, confirming his established market presence and lasting appeal. The painting is signed in the lower right corner “P. Bourgogne,” consistent with documented examples by the artist. It is presented in its ornate original giltwood frame, richly carved with scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs. The warm, time-earned gold surface enhances the depth of the composition and provides a harmonious contrast to the dark tonal ground of the canvas. The reverse retains its original wooden stretcher and backing, consistent with age and authenticity. Condition is excellent, with wear commensurate with age and use. A distinguished and highly decorative work by a documented French Salon painter, ideal for a formal living room, dining room, or entryway, offering scale, color, and classic 19th century French elegance. Dimensions: 36.75″ W x 32.5″ H (framed)
