19th Century English Leather-Bound Illustrated Family Bible with Brass Mounts
$1,800
About
This impressive antique family Bible combines beautifully preserved devotional text with handsome Victorian craftsmanship. Crafted in England circa 1880, the substantial volume is bound in richly textured black leather with raised bands along the spine, gilt lettering, and an embossed central cartouche reading “Holy Bible.”
The front and back covers are further embellished with decorative brass corner mounts accented with small red quatrefoil motifs. Two hinged brass clasps secure the fore edge, each pierced with a Gothic-style quatrefoil opening, while the gilt-edged pages add another elegant detail. Inside, an elaborate polychrome title page identifies the volume as The Illustrated National Family Bible, with the commentaries of Scott and Henry and critical and explanatory notes edited by the Rev. John Eadie, D.D., LL.D. A second title page identifies Pritchard & Co. of Richmond as publisher.
The oversized Bible retains numerous illustrated and decorative pages and has the substantial presence typical of Victorian family Bibles intended for display as well as devotional use. The leather, brass fittings, pages, and binding show appropriate wear and patina from age, including scattered foxing and discoloration to the paper.
The antique Bible is in very good condition commensurate with age and use.
