Add an authentic piece of French printing and bookbinding history to a study, library, or office with this substantial antique press. Crafted in France circa 1860, the traditional “presse à relier” is constructed of heavy cast iron and weighs an impressive 99 pounds.

The rectangular base supports a gracefully arched frame fitted with a large central threaded screw. A wide T-shaped handle turns the screw to raise or lower the solid pressing plate, allowing sheets, signatures, or books to be compressed securely during the binding process. The mechanism remains in good working order.

The press retains a richly patinated black-painted finish enlivened with time-softened gilt floral motifs. Brass-toned collars, trim, and evenly spaced studs accent the dark surface, while expected wear and losses to the painted decoration enhance its authentic workshop character. An embossed crowned-bird emblem appears beneath the base.

Historically, presses of this type were used by bookbinders to flatten folded sheets and hold assembled pages firmly before or during binding. Today, this functional antique also makes a striking decorative accessory for a bookshelf, writing room, library, or collector’s office. It is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
