19th Century French Bronze Champleve Wall Cross with Holy Water Font
$650
About
This colorful cross with holy water font was created in France, circa 1880. Crafted in bronze using the champlevé technique, the antique cross features intricate enamel work in a vibrant palette of turquoise, navy, red, and pink. The decorative surface is adorned with floral and foliate motifs, and centered with a red medallion bearing the Christogram “IHS,” symbolizing the name of Jesus. The base is fitted with a small enameled basin for holy water, delicately decorated and lined in white enamel. The religious symbol is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with richly and vibrant colors. A hook on the reverse allows for easy wall mounting. The Cloisonné or champlevé is an ancient decorative technique in which enamel, glass, or gemstones are applied to metal objects and separated by fine wire or engraved channels. The result is a luminous, jewel-like effect.
