Rich in heraldic symbolism and finely rendered detail, this antique wall plaque features the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada. Crafted circa 1930, the fruitwood carving depicts the crowned shield flanked by a lion and unicorn, the traditional heraldic supporters representing England and Scotland. The quartered shield incorporates the emblems of England, Scotland, Ireland, and France above three maple leaves, while a carved ribbon displays the Canadian motto A Mari Usque Ad Mare, meaning “From Sea to Sea.”

The shaped plaque is mounted against a warm red tartan fabric ground and presented within a handsome walnut and giltwood frame embellished with carved foliate molding. The fruitwood has developed a rich, warm patina that accentuates the depth and precision of the carving. Fitted with a later hanging wire on the reverse, this distinctive armorial decoration would make a distinguished addition to a library, study, office, or traditional interior. The framed plaque is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.

Dimensions: 16.75″ W x 19.25″ H.

Note: It cannot date to circa 1880 because Canada’s present coat of arms and the motto A Mari Usque Ad Mare were officially adopted in 1921. I would list it as circa 1930 unless you have documentation supporting a different date or French origin.
