19th Century French Châteauneuf-du-Pape Painted Metal Grape Harvesting Hotte

Rooted in the winemaking traditions of the Rhône Valley, this antique grape-harvesting hotte was crafted in France circa 1880. Made of galvanized metal, the tapered vessel was designed to be carried on the back of a vineyard worker during the vendange, or annual grape harvest.

The front retains its original painted and stenciled decoration reading “Châteauneuf-du-Pape,” centered by the distinctive papal emblem of the region: the papal tiara above the crossed keys of Saint Peter. This imagery recalls the close association between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Avignon papacy, which helped establish and promote viticulture in the area during the 14th century.

The broad flared opening allowed freshly cut grape clusters to be deposited easily, while the shaped raised back helped protect the carrier. The lower section is fitted with a circular release panel used for emptying the harvested grapes once the hotte was full. Original metal strap fittings remain visible on the reverse.

The surface displays a wonderfully aged gray patina with scattered oxidation, scratches, dents, and wear to the painted decoration, all consistent with decades of agricultural use and adding considerable authenticity and character.

A particularly evocative piece of French wine history, this antique hotte would make a distinctive decorative accent in a wine cellar, tasting room, restaurant, kitchen, or vineyard-inspired interior.
