19th Century French Desvres Faience Platter with Tavern Scene Signed Teniers
$1,950
About
This antique French faience platter was produced in northern France, likely in Desvres, circa 1880, and is decorated with a lively tavern interior scene after David Teniers the Younger. The central composition depicts three figures gathered around a rustic table, rendered with expressive movement and warm, earthy tones typical of Flemish genre scenes celebrating everyday rural life. The scene is signed within the decoration “D.P. Teniers F.A.”, referencing the artistic source and reflecting the common 19th-century practice of adapting celebrated Old Master imagery for decorative faience production. The painterly quality of the figures and architectural setting is complemented by a richly ornamented scalloped rim, decorated with cobalt blue cartouches, foliate scrollwork, and floral motifs highlighted in ochre, green, and iron red. The platter is finished with a traditional tin glaze showing an attractive network of age-related craquelure throughout, consistent with period Desvres production. The reverse retains its original glaze with kiln marks and a painted inventory or workshop number. The piece is in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use, with light surface wear and firing irregularities that enhance its authenticity. Decorative and narrative in character, this antique faience platter is ideal for wall display or as a striking accent in a kitchen, dining room, or French country interior. Dimensions: 20″W x 15″D
