This ornate antique inkwell would bring distinctive French character to a desk, library, or study. Crafted in France circa 1880, the decorative writing accessory is made of spelter and signed “A. Bossu” on the reverse.

The sculptural composition features a proud chantecleer standing atop a naturalistic mound. Recognized as the national emblem of France, the Gallic rooster has long represented courage, vigilance, and national pride. The figure is flanked by two circular ink holders, each retaining its fitted lid and original removable glass container.

The shaped base rests on five delicate curved feet ornamented with acanthus leaves. Its scalloped apron is richly embellished with floral and foliate motifs worked in high relief, while further leafy decoration surrounds the central figure and ink compartments. A warm, time-softened patinated finish with gilt accents highlights the intricate modeling and gives the piece an appealing sense of age.

Little biographical information has been recorded about A. Bossu, a maker or sculptor associated with French figural spelter desk accessories from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Signed Bossu inkwells are known in several animal and historical subjects.

Both functional and highly decorative, the inkwell is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with both original glass inserts intact.
