19th Century French Gothic Oak “Stalle de Chœur” Chair with Lift-Up Seat
$2,400
About
This imposing Gothic stalle de chœur (French for choir stall) was crafted in southern France circa 1860. Built of solid oak, the architectural chair stands on sturdy bracket feet over a scalloped plinth apron, reflecting its ecclesiastical origins. The exceptionally tall back is richly hand carved with pointed arches, Gothic tracery, and lancet motifs, evocative of medieval cathedral woodwork. The enclosed sides and upright proportions emphasize its ceremonial function and visual authority. The bench seat lifts up on iron strap hinges to reveal an interior storage compartment, originally intended for prayer books or liturgical objects. Shaped armrests flank the seat, further reinforcing the throne-like presence of the piece. The antique oak chair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and retains a warm, richly patinated finish throughout. Sculptural and architectural, it may be used today as a dramatic accent chair in an entry hall, library, stair landing, or as a statement piece in a Gothic or historic interior. Dimensions: 23.5″W x 18.5″D x 57″H Seat Height: 18.75″H
