19th Century French Louis XIII Style Carved Oak Hunt Bookcase Gun Cabinet
$6,900
About
Crafted in France circa 1870, this large two-piece Hunt bookcase exemplifies the Louis XIII style with its richly carved oak façade and commanding presence. Measuring 93 inches high by 57 inches wide and 21.5 inches deep, the cabinet features upper glazed doors with arched and pierced carvings, ideal for displaying books or objets d’art. The lower section is adorned with high-relief carvings of game birds and foliage, classic motifs of the French Black Forest Hunt tradition, set within molded panels framed by scrolling vines, grapes, and floral garlands. Prominent lion-paw feet support the base, while the crown is surmounted by a carved cartouche flanked by clusters of grapes and fruiting vines, reinforcing its pastoral theme. Full-length carved columns with corbels and foliate details separate the doors and add sculptural depth. The oak retains a rich, warm patina, enhancing the visual impact of the deep relief work and decorative moldings. A striking antique bibliothèque, this piece offers both display and storage with timeless French craftsmanship and character. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use with a warm and rich patina.
