19th Century French Louis XV Giltwood Mirror with Carved Grape and Vine Crest
$3,200
About
This elegant antique French mirror is distinguished by its richly carved grape and vine ornament, a particularly decorative motif that gives the piece strong visual presence and makes it especially appealing for a dining room, wine room, entry, or living space. Crafted in France circa 1870, the tall mirror is designed in the Louis XV style with a softly arched top, flowing contours, and an elaborate pierced crest.
The pediment is centered by a carved cluster of grapes framed within scrolling openwork, surrounded by twisting vines, leaves, and additional grape clusters that extend outward across the crest. The botanical carving continues along the upper corners, while the lower corners are enriched with raised foliate ornament. The broad molded giltwood frame has developed a warm, softly aged gold leaf surface with subtle reddish undertones and wear that enhance its antique character.
The mirror retains its original mercury glass, displaying the gentle foxing and atmospheric reflection associated with 19th-century mirror plate. The original horizontal wood-plank backing is also preserved, and later hanging hardware has been added for secure installation.
Generously scaled yet versatile, the mirror would work beautifully above a console, mantel, sideboard, or in a formal entry, dining room, or powder room.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
