This elegant antique book stand was crafted in France circa 1880. Designed as a tabletop lectern for displaying a bible or reading other large volumes, the piece features a tilting rectangular book rest framed with finely carved crosshatch detailing and a delicate neoclassical frieze centered with floral and foliate motifs. The adjustable support allows the angle to be changed for comfortable viewing, while a shaped lower ledge secures the book in place when open. The stand rests on four turned and fluted legs joined by a beautifully carved serpentine stretcher adorned with scrolling acanthus leaves and floral garlands. The classical proportions and refined ornamentation reflect the symmetry and decorative restraint associated with Louis XVI design.
