19th Century French Louis XVI Giltwood Adjustable Bible Book Stand
$1,300
About
This elegant antique book stand was crafted in France circa 1880. Designed as a tabletop lectern for displaying a bible or reading other large volumes, the piece features a tilting rectangular book rest framed with finely carved crosshatch detailing and a delicate neoclassical frieze centered with floral and foliate motifs. The adjustable support allows the angle to be changed for comfortable viewing, while a shaped lower ledge secures the book in place when open. The stand rests on four turned and fluted legs joined by a beautifully carved serpentine stretcher adorned with scrolling acanthus leaves and floral garlands. The classical proportions and refined ornamentation reflect the symmetry and decorative restraint associated with Louis XVI design. The surface is finished in a warm gilt tone with gentle wear to the edges and high points, adding depth and highlighting the carved details. Ideal for displaying a Bible, music folio, guest book, or treasured volume, this 19th century French lectern makes a distinctive accent on a desk, console, or library table. The piece is in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use. Bible not included. Dimensions: Opened: 14″W x 12.25″D x 15.25″H Closed: 14”W x 12.25”D x 9.5”H
