19th Century French Oil on Canvas Marine Painting Signed S. Audibert Dated 1885

$2,600

About

Painted circa 1885, the artwork on canvas is set in the original carved gilt wood frame; the scene illustrates the picturesque, ocean-front landscape of the “Port de Marseille”, in southern France. The artwork is signed in the lower right corner by the artist S. Audibert and dated 1885. The maritime painting shows 19th century ocean-fairing ships with masts entering the harbor in the foreground and the “Phare de Sainte Marie lighthouse” in the background in an impressionist style. The painting is in excellent condition with rich, realistic colors; throughout the painting, the viewer can get a sense of the artist’s expertise in the rendering of space, light and a beautifully hazy atmosphere. Decorate a study, living room or den with this beautiful and colorful antique oil painting! S. Audibert was a 19th century painter from Marseille; related to Louis Audibert (1881-1983) and Ernest Audibert (born in 1922), he may have been the father and grandfather, he was known for his landscapes in Provence and coastlines along the French Riviera. Measures: 30″W x 3.25″D x 22″H
