Richly carved with a lively rural scene, this antique serving tray is a charming example of French art populaire. Crafted in Brittany, France circa 1920, the rectangular walnut tray depicts a pipe-smoking farmer guiding two oxen as they pull a heavily laden cart through the countryside.

Executed in low relief, the detailed composition includes rolling fields, trees and a distant cottage with smoke rising from its chimney. Varied carving techniques create texture and depth throughout the landscape, while the warm amber and brown tones emphasize the rustic character of the scene. A fitted glass panel protects the carved decoration while preserving its visibility and allowing the piece to remain functional.

The tray is framed by raised walnut sides with elongated cutout handles at either end for comfortable carrying. A subtle carved border completes the design, while the underside is fitted with four small protective pads. The rich walnut grain and mellow patina enhance its authentic country character.
