Whimsical and highly expressive, this antique French barbotine pitcher depicts a seated bear raising one paw in a playful salute. Crafted in France circa 1890 and attributed to the Sarreguemines manufactory, the sculptural ceramic jug reflects the humorous character pieces favored during the late 19th century.

The bear is modeled with an open mouth forming the pouring spout, rounded ears, a broad chest, and deeply textured fur. A large bundle or wineskin carried over one shoulder creates the handle at the back. Detailed facial features and an animated pose give the figure an engaging personality. A rich amber-brown glaze settles into the molded recesses, emphasizing the contours and providing attractive tonal variations throughout.

This model is illustrated on page 166 of Pichets en Barbotine by Maryse Bottero; see the final photographs for the published reference. The pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a lustrous period glaze.

Founded in 1784 in the Lorraine region, Sarreguemines became celebrated for its colorful earthenware, majolica, and imaginative figural wares. Its character pitchers remain especially desirable for their humor, craftsmanship, and distinctly French appeal.
