19th Century French Painted Figural Gardener Cachepot Planter
$475
About
Add rustic French character to a kitchen, garden room, or conservatory with this charming antique figural cachepot. Crafted in France circa 1880, the decorative planter is modeled as a rustic wooden tub accompanied by a jovial gardener or tradesman figure standing alongside.
The rectangular container is realistically modeled to resemble weathered wooden planks reinforced with vertical braces, while the figure is dressed in a blue apron, white shirt, dark trousers, and yellow shoes and cap. His expressive face, moustache, clasped hands, and rounded form give the piece a wonderful folk-art quality. The surface retains traces of its original painted decoration, with attractive wear and losses that enhance its authentic aged character.
The open container could be used as a small cachepot, planter, utensil holder, or decorative centerpiece. An impressed or incised maker’s mark is visible inside the container, while additional lettering appears near the figure’s feet, although the markings are difficult to decipher.
The antique planter is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
