This authentic antique French poissonnière exemplifies the utilitarian elegance of traditional country kitchen copper. Crafted in France circa 1860, the long, narrow vessel is hand-formed from heavy-gauge copper and was designed specifically for poaching whole fish, its elongated proportions allowing the fish to cook evenly while retaining its shape.

The vessel features softly rounded ends, a gently rolled and slightly flared rim, and a traditionally tinned interior showing the attractive surface wear and oxidation expected from generations of use. The exterior retains a rich, warm copper patina with subtle hammer marks, old seams, minor irregularities, and traces of verdigris that enhance its authentic 19th-century character.

A substantial hand-forged iron swing handle spans the length of the poacher and is secured at either end with copper and brass fittings. The dark iron handle provides a handsome contrast to the warm copper body and reflects the sturdy, practical construction associated with French culinary wares of the period.

Known in France as a poissonnière, this specialized vessel was traditionally used for gently poaching and preparing a whole fish.
