19th Century French Poplar, Leather and Metal Travel Trunk by J. Penet, Paris
$3,800
About
This exceptional 19th-century French travel trunk was crafted in Paris circa 1895 by J. Penet, a respected maker of fine articles de voyage located at 52 Rue Lafayette. Known for producing high-quality trunks and travel accessories during the Belle Époque, J. Penet worked in the tradition of luxury trunk-makers like Louis Vuitton and Goyard, catering to a fashionable and well-traveled clientele. Rectangular in shape and finished on all four sides, the trunk is constructed from solid poplar and reinforced with blackened iron bands and riveted strapping. The corners are fitted with decorative brass mounts, and original leather handles adorn each side. Metal hardware and wood slats run across the top and body, adding both durability and a rugged elegance. A triple brass lock mechanism on the facade provides a secure and ornamental focal point. The trunk’s interior is lined with deep rouge-purple muslin and embellished with a crisscrossed brass ribbon detail on the lid for securing papers or accessories. A maker’s label remains affixed inside, confirming its provenance and adding to its collectible value. The exterior showcases a richly patinated finish with warm tones and characterful wear that speak to its history and use. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, this antique trunk is both functional and decorative—ideal as a coffee table, end-of-bed blanket chest, or simply as a striking accent piece in a refined interior. 36”W x 20”D x 18.5”H
