An intimate moment between two clergymen unfolds in this finely detailed antique genre painting titled L’Évêque à la Lecture (The Bishop Reading). Crafted in France circa 1890, the oil-on-canvas work is signed “M. Valle” in the lower right corner.

The composition depicts a seated cardinal dressed in vivid red robes, holding a small cup and reading a document presented by his standing companion. Leaning closely over the cardinal’s shoulder, the second clergyman appears to share a humorous observation, lending warmth and narrative character to the scene. Their expressive gestures and relaxed interaction contrast with the formality of the richly appointed interior.

A glowing fireplace, gilt mirror, paneled walls, upholstered seating, and patterned carpet establish the elegant setting. Valle renders the fabrics, furnishings, and architectural details with careful precision, while strong contrasts between the cardinal’s brilliant red garments and the shadowed background draw attention to the figures.

The painting is presented in an ornate Rococo-inspired carved giltwood frame embellished with high-relief floral motifs, scrolling foliage, and decorative corner cartouches. Both the painting and frame are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining rich colors and a beautifully aged gilt finish.
