19th Century French Provence Yellow Glazed Terracotta Double-Handled Jug
$425
About
Bring the warmth and rustic character of Southern France to a kitchen, dining room, or collection with this antique Provençal terracotta jug. Crafted in Provence, France circa 1880, the vessel is hand formed with a rounded body, narrow neck, and two large scrolling handles rising gracefully from the shoulders to the rim.
The earthenware jug is covered in a vibrant yellow glaze, a color long associated with traditional pottery from Provence. Subtle variations in tone, glaze pooling, surface irregularities, and visible traces of hand craftsmanship give the piece wonderful authenticity and character. The underside remains largely unglazed, revealing the warm reddish terracotta body.
Originally utilitarian, this type of vessel would have been used in the home for storing or serving liquids. Today, it would make an appealing decorative accent displayed alone, grouped with other French pottery, or filled with dried flowers or branches.
The antique jug is in very good condition commensurate with age and use.
