19th Century European Floral Still Life Oil Painting Signed Karl Ruperti
$6,300
About
Richly colored and finely detailed, this antique floral still life was painted by Karl Ruperti during the late 19th century. Crafted in Belgium circa 1880, the oil on canvas presents an abundant bouquet arranged in a blue-and-white porcelain vase and is signed “K. Ruperti” along the lower right edge.
The vertical composition features an exuberant arrangement of white blossoms, pink fuchsias, roses, hydrangea-like blooms, deep red flowers, and lush green foliage set against a warm neutral background. At the center, the bouquet rises from a finely painted blue-and-white porcelain vase decorated with a pastoral landscape. Its cool cobalt decoration provides an elegant contrast to the vivid pink, white, red, and purple flowers. A freshly cut pink rose resting on the ledge below adds depth and a particularly charming still-life detail.
Ruperti combines careful botanical observation with the decorative richness associated with the Belgian and Flemish still-life tradition. The cascading foliage, layered blossoms, and softly modeled background give the composition both movement and depth, while the detailed treatment of the porcelain vessel adds another level of visual interest.
Karl Ruperti was a 19th-century painter associated with the Belgian School and known principally through his signed still-life paintings. Auction records document floral compositions, flower-filled interiors, hunting still lifes, and elaborate arrangements of decorative objects. A signed floral still life dated 1884 is recorded on the art market, supporting an active period during the late 19th century. Detailed biographical information about Ruperti remains limited, but his known works demonstrate a consistent interest in richly layered still-life compositions and carefully rendered flowers and vessels.
The painting is presented in an impressive antique giltwood and composition frame embellished with repeating acanthus leaves, floral ornamentation, and finely molded borders. The richly decorated frame complements the elaborate floral subject and gives the work a substantial architectural presence.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Age-related craquelure, scattered restoration, and minor losses to the gilt finish consistent with age.
