19th Century French Terracotta Olive Oil Storage Jar
$2,800
About
This substantial antique French terracotta jar was crafted in southern France circa 1860 and was originally used for the storage of olive oil or agricultural liquids. Thrown by hand, the vessel features a tall ovoid body tapering to a narrow foot, topped with a thick rolled rim and fitted with applied loop handles at the shoulder. The interior and upper rim retain a rich olive-green glaze, traditionally used to render the vessel impermeable, while the lower body remains unglazed, allowing for natural evaporation and temperature regulation. The surface displays beautifully aged patina with visible throwing lines, glaze drips, mineral deposits, and wear consistent with generations of utilitarian use, all contributing to its authentic antique character. Strongly provincial in form and presence, this antique jar makes an exceptional decorative statement today, ideal as a floor vessel, sculptural accent, or planter in a French country, Mediterranean, or rustic interior. This piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 20.5″ diameter x 29.25″H.
