19th Century Louis Philippe Burled Mahogany Five-Drawer Chest with Marble Top
$4,900
About
Crafted in France circa 1850, this elegant Louis Philippe commode showcases the refined symmetry and understated grandeur characteristic of mid-19th century French design. The chest is built in richly burled mahogany with beautifully book-matched veneer panels across the drawer fronts, creating dramatic flame-like grain patterns in warm tones of amber, honey, and deep reddish brown. The rectangular case is crowned with its original black marble top, distinguished by subtle white veining and a softly molded edge. The stone provides a sophisticated contrast to the warmth of the wood while offering a durable surface. The façade features a narrow frieze drawer above three full-length drawers, each fitted with turned wooden knobs and original escutcheons; it is further dressed with a bottom drawer within the plinth at the base. Rounded front corners, restrained molding, and classic Louis Philippe block feet give the piece its balanced architectural presence. The drawers retain their traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery and slide smoothly, revealing the solid craftsmanship typical of quality French cabinetry from the period. The wood has developed a beautiful warm patina over time, further enhancing the depth of the burled veneer. Excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use, and wonderful storage cabinet with five drawers! Dimensions: 48.75″W x 21″D x 37.5″H
