Created in Belgium circa 1890, and set in the original thick carved giltwood frame, this large painting depicts two hunting dogs in a natural setting, alert and focused as if tracking a scent. A wonderful addition to a ranch or hunting lodge! Henry Schouten (1857-1927), was a Belgian artist known for his realistic depictions of animals, rural scenes, and landscapes. Schouten’s style can be described as naturalistic, showing a strong influence from 19th-century animal painters. He often focused on capturing the dynamics of animals in their natural environments, displaying a sensitivity to texture and anatomy, particularly in the way he painted the fur, muscle, and movement of the animals. Schouten’s work is associated with the Belgian School, and while he exhibited his art internationally, he was particularly appreciated in Europe. He studied at the Academy of Brussels from 1876 to 1881, and was influenced by contemporary European artists of his time, especially Alfred Jacques Verwee, a renowned fellow animal painter.
