About
Painted by French artist Edmond Charles Joseph Yon (1836–1897), this evocative landscape titled “Paysanne sur un chemin” (“Peasant Woman on a Path”), beautifully captures the quiet poetry of rural France. Executed in oil on canvas, the composition depicts a tranquil country lane bordered by rustic cottages, where a lone peasant woman walks beneath a pastel sky as chickens forage nearby. Yon’s deft brushwork and refined palette lend warmth and immediacy to the scene, balancing natural realism with lyrical atmosphere. The work is signed lower left and presented in its original richly carved giltwood frame. Born in Paris, Yon studied under Pouget and Lequien before debuting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1865, where he received numerous medals, including third class in 1872, second class in 1875, and a silver medal in 1889. Influenced by the Barbizon School, Yon became celebrated for his serene views of wooded paths, riverbanks, and sunlit clearings, painted with remarkable sensitivity to light and texture. A skilled engraver and illustrator as well, he contributed to Le Monde Illustré and Magasin Pittoresque, and was named Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1886. Yon’s works are represented in major museum collections, including Amiens, Lille, Rouen, and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, as well as in Antwerp and Liège. Listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, his paintings continue to be prized for their harmonious blend of natural truth and poetic charm. This fine example remains in excellent condition commensurate with age, retaining its original frame and rich, luminous tones. Measures: 27.25″ H × 21″ W
