19th Century Spanish Oak Dining Chairs with Leather, Set of 8
$5,300
About
Crafted in Spain circa 1880, this complete set of eight antique dining chairs combines sturdy oak construction with richly aged leather upholstery and a strong Renaissance Revival character. Each chair features a tall shaped back and broad square seat upholstered in warm brown leather, secured with large iron nailheads that accentuate the bold, architectural silhouette.
The solid oak frames are raised on finely turned legs joined by double H-form stretchers, giving the chairs excellent stability while reinforcing their traditional Spanish appearance. The repeated baluster turnings and block details create a handsome rhythm around the base, while the softly shaped backs add a more graceful counterpoint to the robust construction.
The leather has developed a desirable patina with natural tonal variation, surface wear, and character consistent with age and use. Together with the deep walnut-toned finish of the oak, it gives the set an authentic, lived-in quality particularly well suited to a large farmhouse, refectory, or monastery-style dining table.
Substantial without feeling overly heavy, these antique chairs would work equally well in a dining room, wine cellar, kitchen, or Mediterranean-inspired interior. The set is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
